Lumb's journey began at Lord Byng Secondary in Vancouver, where he showed early promise beyond running. Following his father's path, he placed 10th overall in the Junior Men's 8 km race at the 2016 Canadian Cross Country Championships. Enrolling at the University of British Columbia in 2016, he competed for the Thunderbirds across cross country and track. In his UBC tenure, he was a multiple-time U Sports medalist, including a fourth-place finish in the 5000 m at the 2017 U Sports Championships. The following fall, he secured third place at the U Sports Cross Country Championships in Vancouver, British Columbia. By the 2018 U Sports Track and Field Championships, Lumb finished seventh in the 1500 m and third in the 5000 m. His peak at UBC arrived in 2019 when he won the 5000 m title and took third over 1500 m. In April 2021, now representing Washington, he ran a personal best of 13:24.25 in the 5000 m at the Drake Relays. In July 2023, he made his Diamond League debut at the Bislett Games in Oslo with a time of 7:46.28 over 3000 m.

In Their Own Story

In fall 2021, Lumb transferred to the University of Washington. He placed tenth at the Pac-12 cross country Championships and won the West Regional before finishing 87th at the national championship. His breakthrough on the track came in May 2022 at the Pac-12 Track and Field Championships, where he ran a 28:11.49 personal best to take second in the 10,000 m, just 0.32 seconds behind Stanford's Charles Hicks. This performance set a new University of Washington school record. February 2023 brought unique moments: Lumb joined seven teammates to run a sub-4 minute mile and clocked 3:52.62 in Boston for the second-fastest indoor mile in Canadian history. He also anchored Washington's team, which ran the NCAA's second-fastest distance medley relay (DMR) of all time, though they finished fourth at the 2023 NCAA Indoor Championships where he placed eighth in the 3000 m.

Turning professional on April 21, 2023, Lumb signed with On Running. His first major pro victory came in July at the Canadian Track and Field Championships, winning the 1500m in a meet-record time of 3:37.34. He represented Canada at the World Championships in Budapest that August but finished eighth in his heat, missing the semi-finals. A prolific September followed: on September 4, he ran a 1500 m personal best of 3:34.55 in Padova, Italy. Two days later in Rovereto, he broke Mo Ahmed's Canadian record with a 7:38.92 run in the 3000 m. Just four days after that in Zagreb, he lowered his own mark to 7:36.46. On October 1, he finished fifth at the inaugural World Road Running Championships in Riga with a Canadian record time of 3:56.98 in the road mile. He capped the year by winning first place at the Canadian Cross Country Championships on November 25 in Ottawa and setting the Canadian indoor 3000 m record (7:38.39) in Boston the following week. In 2024, he qualified for the final at the World Athletics Indoor Championships, placing 13th in the 1500 m.
