Life Is Good

A historic chart run holding the number two spot for eight consecutive weeks.

Life Is Good is a definitive collaboration between American rapper Future and Canadian rapper Drake, released on January 10, 2020. The track was later confirmed as the third single from Future's eighth studio album, High Off Life. Upon release, it debuted and peaked at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100, where it made history by spending its first eight weeks at that position, held back only by Roddy Ricch's "The Box". This achievement marked a significant milestone in Future's career as his highest-charting song as a lead artist until subsequent collaborations with Drake debuted at number one.

Lore & Background

In late December 2019, anticipation built when Future and Drake were spotted in Atlanta, Georgia, filming a music video inside a McDonald's location. The shoot featured notable artists including 21 Savage, Mike Will Made-It, Lil Yachty, and Big Bank. Media personality DJ Akademiks fueled the hype by posting the casting call, while Future had already teased a snippet on his Instagram story. Directed by Julien Christian Lutz (Director X), the video released at midnight on January 10 alongside the song. It uniquely depicted both artists in ordinary roles such as fast food workers, mechanics, IT workers, off-brand Apple Store employees, garbage men, chefs, aspiring rappers, and assistant directors. By April 2025, this visual narrative had amassed 2.2 billion views on YouTube.

In Their Own Story

The release of Life Is Good was followed by a remix on February 15, 2020, featuring American rappers DaBaby and Lil Baby. Three days prior to this release, Future teased their vocals on an Instagram story. This remix version was subsequently included on Future's eighth studio album, High Off Life, appearing alongside the original track. Additionally, a separate remix of the song was released by Lil Wayne off his mixtape No Ceilings 3. The success of the original single was immense; it sold 9 million units in the US by March 3, 2021. Ultimately, on November 22, 2021, the RIAA certified the song diamond for selling over 10 million units in the United States.

Reader's Guide

Listeners can appreciate the structural design of Life Is Good, which splits the track into two distinct halves: Drake performing the first half and Future performing the latter, each set to a different beat. Jason Lipshutz of Billboard noted this structure was reminiscent of Drake's feature on Travis Scott's 2018 hit "Sicko Mode", praising how the artists' styles complemented one another as they did on their joint 2015 mixtape. XXL described the production and instrumentation as featuring "dreamy chords with a mid-tempo vibe". The song credits list Future and Drake as principal and featured vocalists respectively, with D. Hill and OZ handling production. The track remained Future's highest-charting effort until "Way 2 Sexy" (with Young Thug) and "Wait 4 U" (with Tems), two other Future-Drake collaborations that debuted at the top of the charts.
